Alaska..... Iditarod! Official Re-Start is Today!
Today is the official Re-Start of the Iditarod!
Looks like 85 mushers and their dog teams will take out of Willow at 2 PM today for the Last Great Race!
People from all over the world are here to watch the race!
So while we wait for the end of the race and the winners and their dogs to claim their victory...
it is a good time to reflect on the winners of the past.... And one must always think of Susan Butcher...
the gal who showed us all what determination and strong will could do...
March of 1985 Libby Riddles was the first woman to win the Iditarod...
Then in 1986 Susan Butcher won her first Iditarod she went on to win in 1987, 1988 and 1990!
Back in that day the saying was Alaska where men are men and Women Win the Iditarod! These two women really riled the men folk... rumbling was louder from the men then some active volcanoes.
Susan Ran the race 18 times...In 2005 she was diagnosed with leukemia and she died August 2006
The State of Alaska established the first Saturday of every March as Susan Butcher Day. This Year is March 6th Today!
In Alaska Susan Butcher is known as a true Pioneer... and hero.... Her husband and children David, Tekla and Chisana Monson continue tradition at their Trail Breaker Kennel You can visit them at http://trailbreakerkennel.com/
