President Obama Came to Alaska…
President Obama made the trip to Alaska this week and like all people who see Alaska for the first time, he seemed to be quite impressed. He got to see quite a bit of our beautiful state in a short amount of time. Air Force one landed at JBEAR Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Airforce Base, then came to Anchorage in the longest ever motorcade and attended the Glacier Conference. He had dinner at Alice Rogoff’s home on Lake Campbell. He stayed at the Captain Cook Hotel Breakfast at the Snow City Café… where he opted for stickybuns and pastries over the Barakli Obamlet or Kale to the Chief special dishes prepared in his honor! He autographed a little boys book.
Day 2 he went to Seward and walked a well-traveled path of Exit Glacier with Bear Grylls of Reality TV show running wild with Bear Grylls He went out on a boat out of Seward. He got the tour of Glaciers and the beautiful waters of Resurrection Bay and he saw a Whale.
He danced with the children in Dillingham. The children were surprised and happy He got to meet Iditarod Musher John Baker and his Blue Eyed Puppies. He held one named Feathers and got a Iditarod coat he seemed happy about. He held an Alaskan Salmon who surprised him with something he had never experienced before.
He walked in the Rain in Kotzbue ( No Umbrella!) and talked about Climate Change to a captive audience. He told them we may finally be getting an Ice Breaker built… Russia has 40 and they are building 11. We have 1. http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/09/02/usa-obama-alaska-idUSL1N1170BA20150902
He Gave Denali back its name… and probably got to fly over it and see it in all its splendor!
He met the people, he shook their hands and hugged some babies and in general, people were grateful to him for his visit and he was gracious in his outreach to each community. He left as he came…on Airforce one and took all the black cars and secret service guys with him.
I was proud of Alaskans. They welcomed the President with open arms and big smiles! And other than the environmentalists (hello… he is on your side) there were no protests or adverse issues or politics.
President Obama did say he would come back and bring his family, when he could stay longer and enjoy
more of this gorgeous state! He was amazed by the beauty of Alaska!
He didn’t come to Homer… maybe next time!
