What are the symptoms of H1N1... and how are they different from the common cold?
How can you help stop the spread?

I don't know if this is accurate or not but several different sources seem to be giving us this information so I thought I would pass it on... some say the HINI outbreak will peak this week...some say it will break out again in January... I am not a doctor and have no idea but the chart is interesting so I thought I would pass it on... it makes some sense... as always wash your hands and stay home if you are sick and as we do in my office LYSOL!

Thanks for the information Debra. We hear so much about the vaccine, but we don't tend to hear much about the actual symptoms of the flu.
Hi Debra,
Thank you for sharing an educational and very helpful article.
John Pusa
You also have to make a distinction between the seasonal flu and the H1N1 virus. The symptons you describe for the flu includes both seasnal flu and H1N1. THE differences are that if you have the flu symptons now, it is likely H1N1. The seasonal flu season has not started yet. Secondly, with H1N1 there are gastro-intestinal symptons such as diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps along with the symptons described above. These symptons are not present in seasonal flu.
Hello Barbara and John glad I could help in some way...
Paul you know more than I do about it... thanks for adding the additional information....
Wonderful information to provide to the ActiveRain community. Thanks.
I'm sending this to everyone in my family.
This is pretty cool info .... thanks for posting
Thank you for the nice post and clarity. aaaaaahhhpt choooo. Oops, got to run.
Thanks for organizing this chart. I have 3 year old twins and am thinking about having them get the vaccine for it. My husband had one and I am thinking about getting one. Just a little concerned about getting sick from the vaccine itself. Thanks. Agnelica
What a gift. Thanks for sharing. God bless us all and keep this flu from becoming a worse epidemic.
Great information. I JUST heard from a good friend that their son died of this recently.
Hi Debra, it's running rampid here in Virginia. Thanks for sharing the information. Several in my family already have it, and one of the agents at the office said this morning " at all costs avoid getting this..it's was the worst I've ever experienced!"
Your post is timely and informative. Thanks!
Great post. I will send it on to everyone I know also.
Debra:
I did an earlier post on H!N! and reminded everyone to get a shot. I'm carrying hand sanitizer in my car. Thanks for posting the symptoms. I'm going to reblog this.
Great post! I just got over the swine flu. i was taking Tamiflu and quarantined in my room for 5 days!
Debra -
I'm just getting over the swine flu myself. Two additional points - if it is swine flu it comes on VERY quickly. I took my wife to work on Friday and one hour later was in bed with body racking chills that lasted for hours.
Second - if you are diabetic, or have a diabetic child, be careful - the flu can adversely affect blood sugar levels and send them soaring.
Michael
Thank you for posting this info !!! Let's hope none of us need to referr to it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The number 1 way germs are spread in the world is not enough hand washing! Soo...wash thoroughly ond OFTEN!
I'm trying to figure out what the deal is with the vaccines with Mercury? Do you know about this?
This is a good chart. I have not seen this outline anywhere so thanks for posting.
Educational post -- there is a lot of concern and worry about this for this season - keep they Lysol handy !
Thanks for the info. Not as scary as the journalists want us to believe. "Tune in at 5pm! Is swine flu killing your children?!?!?"
Thank you for the good info. OF course, we have other flus around also, so we may not know right away if it is the H1N1. A bit scary, I must admit. I do realize there may be a little sensationalizing going on as usual, but the numbers are higher than typical flu season, and they are earlier also.
WebMD from our AR resident nurse. Will be on the lookout for the symptoms. If loved ones start to oink a lot, is that part of the warning signs? Great post!
Thank you for the great information. I work in the health care industry as well as real estate. I have spoken to a lot of people who have had H1N1 and the number one thing I have noticed that seems to be common is that it starts with a sore throat. After the sore throat sets in you get the persistant fever of around 102 and the body aches like you have been hit by a bus. It has the potential of becomming such a huge problem and the EMS community in Portland is gearing up and ready in the event that it becomes bigger! Very scary. I hope that everybody reading the above post stays healthy and doesnt have to experience this flu. Remember the single best way to prevent the spread of germs is handwashing! Happy Health! Great post!
Debra,
I would like to add my thanks for posting this valuable information. As with all colds and flu it is always best to stay home and take care of yourself.
Hopefully not too many of us will catch it!
I hate to say it, just in case I get jinxed, but I have never had the flu. I found this comparision table really easy to follow and am now on the alert for any one in the family. Thanks.
Thank You all for your comments... I have to say I am surprised... I went to work and just checked in and here you all are... I am glad if I could be of any help to anyone but I can take no credit for it... I think we are all a little worried about this flu and whatt to expect... we need to protect our family and ourselves... was really sorry to hear from Kat that somone she knows child died of this... and the tip to watch diabetics is really a good tip and wash your hands all the time... thanks everyone...
My wife has been dealing with H1N1 for the past 7 days. I can tell you she definitely has a sore throat and stuffy nose which conflicts with your list.
She's been coughing so much that she's now got mile pneumonia.
At least she's finally improving - it was really bad 2 days ago.
County of San Diego just received their second shipment of H1N1 nasal mist. I plan on going on Wednesday to get my children immunized. My husband is NEVER sick and got hit VERY hard with this thing. Better safe than sorry and nothing is worse than seeing your children sick.
take a quick quiz to see if you have H1N1 (Hi Knee flu) https://h1n1.cloudapp.net/Default.aspx
Bill I hope your wife is getting better and she is proof that none of us know what we are really dealing with here... take good care of her and yourself..
Debbie the same to you... take care of yourself too I hope your husband is better and gets over this quick... and your children dont get sick.
After reading some of the responses here there is some very good information here... please read the folks who have first hand experience or medical knowledge... it really isn't anything to mess with
again thanks to everyone who took the time to share your knowledge on this subject!
This is a great post. Thank you so much for the information.
I'm glad Paul made the distinction between H1N1 and seasonal flu as well, Debra. What you had listed seemed to be true of just about any typical flu. I've been confused about why all the fuss is being made about the H1N1 flu as opposed to the regular flu. Sounded pretty much the same to me.
Thank You Aaron for stopping by....
Yes Heather I think we are all confused... and we aren't getting many really good answers are we?
But there are people who have gotten really sick and some deaths... I was very surprised in the folks who commented here about people being sick in their own family and one person who died... that is serious...so it is worth paying attention and being somewhat cautious!
Debra - great information...but I've been sick for the past 5 days and I'm not sure which it is. It seems too severe and long to be just a cold, but I'm hoping that's what it is. Everyone needs to pay attention and be very cautious!
I hope you get over it soon... I will say the old standards are still the best... a cut up lemon in a jug of water an keep it in the fridge and drink it first thing in the morning...cleans your system out... really... hope you are well soon
Our seven year old had it last week and his symptoms were pretty much as you describe. Going to the Dr's was like going to role call at his school there were so many kids he knew there.
It was pretty mild for him and he was over it in about five days, he has mild asthma that's why they gave him Tami flu otherwise they say to just let it run it's course.
It is very dangerous for certain people and especially women who are pregnant, but the general population seems to be doing OK with it.
Wish I had this list last week.
Thanks for posting.
I am waiting for my shot for swine flu because I am in an at risk group. I don't fear the side effects because I don't want to get the main effect.
Debra - Thanks for the info. I'm sure it will help lots of folks distinguish between their cold symptoms and the flu. There is also a lot of research that seems to indicate the need for most to take significantly high levels of vitamin D--that it is helpful in avoiding the flu as well as treating it. And most seem to be deficient in vitamin D, especially during the winter.
Debra:
Thanks for sharing the differences. I JUST took my 10 year old son to the Dr and was told that he might have H1N1, but since the govt is taking all flu like symptoms and recording them all as H1N1 they stopped performing the test and just diagnose H1N1. They are also not prescribing Tamiflu except for in kids under 2. He said treat the symptoms and if the fever stays past today then its H1N1. Real clear huh? Blessings to all.
David I am glad you son is better and doing well... mild version is good in comparison
Joe I hope it all works well for you... and you do not get the flu
John I had not heard that about Vit D but it makes sense.... I do think yogurt every day is good for your immune system
Lisa it does seem like they are just diagnosing everything as H1N1 ...that is what they are doing up here... if you have the symptoms of flu you have H1N1...makes you wonder doesn't it... they don't even test you at all....
thanks to all and I hope everyone stays healthy!
Good information! I hope to avoid either and or both.
Yes, very good information. So important, when sick with the flu, not to "soldier on", not to report to work or to school. Essential to look after ourselves, so no secondary infections (such as pneumonia).
Wow, great post. I will pass it along
Yes we all need to steer clear of it for sure... thank you all for stopping by!
Thanks, some very good information. Hope everyone stays well.
Debra -- Thanks for the helpful information. I am forwarding this list to everyone I know.
I have read that another sympton of this flu is the skin may change color especially in children, if you notice a grayish-blue color go to the emergency room as quickly as possible. Observe your sick ones closely.
Hello Jim and Judy... yes lets all stay well...wash those hands...
Dolores that is really good information... thank you very much
Hi Debra! I saw this on a re-blog and decided to re-blog it myself...what helpful information...thank you! :)
