IDITAROD 2010 MUSHERS TO HONOR FALLEN SOLDIERS & MILITARY WIDOWS

IDITAROD 2010 MUSHERS TO HONOR FALLEN SOLDIERS & MILITARY WIDOWS

IDITAROD MUSHERS TO HONOR FALLEN SOLDIERS & MILITARY WIDOW
This is a new and wonderful part of the Iditarod 2010....

One hundred military widows will be in Anchorage this week to be honored at the 38th annual Iditarod.

As the widows look on, six mushers - Martin Buser, Jeff King, DeeDee Jonrowe, Sue Allen, Michelle Phillips and Judy Currier will carry ribbons with the names of the fallen military heroes  who have lost their lives in service to their country.

The widows are attending the 2010 TAPS National Military Widow Gathering March 3-7.  The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) was founded by Bonnie Carroll after the death of her husband - Alaska Army National Guard Brigadier General Tom Carroll - in a military aircraft crash in November 1992.

Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Carroll has grown TAPS into a national network with over 25,000 surviving family members, providing emotional support and care following the death of a loved one serving in the armed forces.

The Alaska gathering offers attendees an exciting adventure and the chance to meet other military surviving spouses.  Through the generosity of local companies, funds were raised to support lodging, meals and activities (including, skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, dog-sledding, and a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center) for the military widows.

Year-round, TAPS offers peer-based emotional support, grief and trauma resources, seminars and "Good Grief Camps" for children, case work assistance, and 24/7 crisis intervention care for anyone who has been affected by a death in the Armed Forces.

For more information on TAPS, please visit www.taps.org

Here are 2 of the widows with Martin Buser.... 4 time Iditarod Champion

Iditarod 2010 The Spirit of Alaska! More Than a Race…

Iditarod 2010 The Spirit of Alaska! More Than a Race…

The Iditarod Begins this weekend in Anchorage Alaska….then to Eagle River and then on to Wasilla for the restart… then it is the historic trail to Nome… The 1,149 Mile race to Nome commemorates the brave mushers and dog teams who saved the lives of hundreds of people in 1925 from a diphtheria epidemic.

So check out some of these links especially http://www.iditarod.com  the official site of the Iditarod …. Here you can find the history of the Iditarod and the story of the mushers, and their dogs ….it took them some 6 days in temperatures of 40 below and winds strong enough to blow a dog team and sled right over… Gunnar Kaasen drove the final trip into Nome thru a 80 mile pr hour wind blizzard. His lead dog Balto led the way and to this day there is statue of Balto in Central Park of New York City…

These sites will keep you updated on the events of the current Iditarod… you can find all the information you need right here http://www.iditarod.com/  http://www.ultimateiditarod.com/  http://insider.iditarod.com/

And take the time to listen to Alaska’s official Troubadour Hobo Jim… sing his song….Iditarod! and if you ever get the chance to go to Nome in March you can sing along with Hobo Jim! And if that sounds to cold come to Homer Alaska in the summer and we will make sure you hear it loud and clear some night!
