EPA Lead Safety for Renovation, Repair, and Painting

On April 22, 2010, the new EPA Lead-Safe RRP rule went into effect.   With fines established at $32,500 per offense, it is important to get trained and certified under this new rule.   Environmental Management, Inc. (EMI) in Anchorage is EPA-approved to provide this training.  Once certified, you will be able to advertise that you comply with the requirements of this new law-40 CFR Part 745 issued under the authority of Section 402(c)(3) of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

This certification is good for five years.

EPA Requirements:  • Initial training is 8 hours

Who needs certification: • Firms that perform renovation activities

• Individuals performing renovation activities

• Currently certified Lead Abatement Supervisors and Workers

Common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips by disturbing lead-based paint, which can be harmful to adults and children.  To protect against this risk, EPA issued a rule requiring the use of lead-safe practices and other actions aimed at preventing lead poisoning.  Under the rule-beginning April 22, 2010 - contractors, painters, property managers, and others who perform renovations in houses, apartments, and child-occupied facilities built before 1978 must have proof of their RRP certification on the job, or face steep fines.  Those performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes and certain other facilities must be certified and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.
