Homer Alaska...Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea

Homer Alaska… Some say the Eighth Wonder of the World.

People come to Homer Alaska and fall in love; Not with other people but with Homer. It is really one of a kind. There is no other place in the world like Homer Alaska. There are many names for Homer…Shangri-La, Banana Belt of Alaska, End of the Road, Aspen of Alaska, Halibut Capital of the World and the local favorite…. Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea

The first time you see Homer from the top of the hill it is breathtaking. The beauty of it all is hard to take in. No matter what the season, standing at top looking at Kachemak Bay, Glaciers, The Homer spit, Cook Inlet and the Volcanoes glistening in the brilliant colored Ocean is just plain memorizing.  There are some who come up over the hill and stop at the overview and see Homer for the first time, fall in love and never go back to where they came from. As you look down and see Homer nestled in at the bottom of the hill and

the Homer Spit reaching out to the end of the sea….

You understand why we call it the Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea.

Homer is one of the most unique places you will ever find to live or visit. The scenery is beautiful but so are the people! You can be anything you want to be in Homer. I like to say you can be anonymous or you can be the mayor… your choice. In some ways it is like stepping back in time. People are kind and generous. We don’t have road rage or traffic jams. We have one stop light and one 4 way stop that people still have not figured out the rules for who has the right away. People are polite they don’t honk at people who don’t hit the gas pedal as soon as the light turns green. It’s just a nice place to live. People still help people. It is like an eclectic Happy Days. We still have parades and people enjoy them

Homer is located about 250 miles south of Anchorage. There is only one road to Homer, Sterling Highway, which is actually HWY 1 which ends at the spit…. Hence the name End of the Road or where the road ends and the sea begins. The end of the spit is a beach…and it is something everyone should be lucky enough to see someday! I was with some folks from Germany who called it the 8th Wonder of the World….I know I feel pretty lucky to be able to live here and be part of this wonderful community!
